I had not long returned from a year travelling in Asia at the time of this recording. My partner and I had spent some time in Ladakh, an area of India that is in fact on the Tibetan plateau and home to many monasteries. One day we went on a trip to a remote monastery to witness a ceremony wherein the universe is once again called into existence via its re-creation through ritual. We were not the only Westerners in attendance, in fact an entire tour bus of wealthy Germans on a package tour showed up and caused an incredible ruckus when one of them climbed up onto the podium behind the head lama in the middle of an incantation in order to shoot some video footage over the lamas shoulder. When asked to desist by the shocked Lama this elderly tourist proceeded to shout and gesticulate- laughing to his friends about this 'uptight witch doctor'.
I was embarrassed to even be there.
