about

Since the mid-90s I had been experimenting with a primitive recording method that I read about in a book. This involved placing metal foil over the erase head of a tape machine so as to enable overdubbing. What I loved about this technique was that one was never sure what one was going to wind up with. For starters it was impossible to monitor the underlying tracks when recording a new one- and so the development of the composition was more dependent on memory and a sense for the 'feeling' of the piece. Secondly one was never quite sure how the different sounds would interact with each other as the tape got more and more saturated and tonalities interfered with each other.
This particular track is the last track I ever recorded on one of my favourite old tape decks. Near the end (where the tape runs out..) you hear a sudden swoop of acceleration on the last of the over dubs as the drive band of the deck finally gave up the ghost and broke. I'd already repaired this band several times but this time the damage was too severe to be fixed.

I am planning to release an extensive set of all these recordings some day: 'Complete Tinfoil Recordings- 1996- 2006'. Listening back to the tapes I think they represent some of the most 'mysterious' and haunted music I ever made.
