A la gente de Sorata de Bolivia - Fiesta de Sorata

from Pipe and Drum Music of Bolivia by PseudoArcana

/

about

Recorded over 3 cacophonous days in the Altiplano village of Sorata during a fiesta celebrating the independence of Bolivia. The party went 24 hours a day and was one of the most drunken spectacles I've ever witnessed. Each farm and business in the village had its own pipe and drum band made up of a big marching bass drum, an occasional snare drum, and a whole bunch of men hyperventilating as they blew the same tune into their pan-pipes over and over and over again. I'm practically certain that part of the reason for this was the light headed euphoric dizziness brought on by playing like this whilst drunk. This secondary state was guaranteed as each group had as its center and anchor a monstrous and seemingly inexhaustible tower of crates of beer. At times it seemed as though the different groups were battling with each other to be the loudest. The general disregard for the concepts of harmony and playing in time were most admirable.
