The contrast between the cultures of the high stark Altiplano and the lush low jungle regions of Bolivia is profound. The people of the Altiplano live a life swaddled in layers of alpaca wool in a perpetual struggle against the environment- low oxygen levels, scarce water and short growing seasons. They are (to generalise...) a tough and stoic people not inclined to waste breath on idle chat.
No such difficulties exist in the warm and fecund Amazon Basin. The hazards here are excessive damp and a myriad of tropical diseases. With the crops growing quickly to obscene size and giant fish that virtually leap out of the chocolate red rivers onto the dinner table the general pace of life is much more laid back and relaxed.
